The desert
Among the various tourist attractions of Iran, the desert undoubtedly enjoys a special charm.
The attractions of this part of the Yazd region can be taken into consideration by following two itineraries:
The first itinerary is the one that starts from Yazd and - after passing through the ancient mosque of Fahraj, which is located at the edge of the desert, - reaches as far as Bafq. Along the way, on the edge of the desert, there are tamarisk woods. At the end of the itinerary for Bafq, there is the beautiful park of Ahan Shahr, about 20 hectares of surface, full of ancient palm trees and covered with flowers of different species.
The other route, which follows the Yazd - Kharanaq - Bayaze route reaching Khur Biabanak, is filled with dome-shaped sandy hills and covered with wild shrubs and bushes. Along the way there are numerous caravanserais with characteristic arched windows. Among the interesting complexes to see is the fortress of Bayaze, one of the ancient military citadels quite well preserved, which is located in the gardens of the village of Khur Biabanak, surrounded by palm and olive trees and by various species of fruit and citrus trees. . The Bayaze fortress is important from an archaeological point of view. Among other things to see in this locality is a robust olive tree that is over a thousand years old.
The desert areas of the Yazd region can be divided according to the following districts:
- the Ardakan desert, which is considered the most important desert in the region and extends in the shape of a horseshoe north of Ardakan. This desert area is located between two mountains that rise lonely, Mount Heresh to the south 1939 meters high and the Siah Kuh (Black Mountain) to the north 2050 meters high. In it the alluvial streams that overturn from the slopes of these two mountains gather.
- the Abarqu desert which extends in a circular shape between two mountain ranges not far from the Taghestan desert.
- the Dar Anjir desert, considered the third in order of importance among the desert areas of the Yazd region, extends for about 1500 km2 in the eastern part of the region.
