Gonbad-E Sorkh

Red dome

Among the five existing mausoleums in Marāgheh, the oldest is the Red Dome which is known mostly as "Ghermezi Gonbad". It is a quadrangular building with a domed ceiling raised on moqarnas. It has a shabestān (usually it indicates an often covered underground hall of a mosque with equal and parallel columns) which is placed at the top and inside and below the building a kind of crypt has been built. In the east wing there is a door that connects this crypt from the outside which has no access to the shabestān. The four windows of the building were built in such a way that from the inside they are placed in the upper end and from the outside on the four main sides to 8 corners of the ceiling. Other small openings were also opened in the ribbon-shaped epigraphs of the west, south and east facades that were created later. The building's foundations were made of polished stone. Also the angular columns and the capitals whose small foundations support arches of the secondary facades, are in stone. The rest of the building is all in brick and among these blocks of turquoise tiles have been used. The epigraphs, the geometric patterns obtained from the polished red brick and the colored glazed tiles were fixed above the threshold of the building. According to these epigraphs, it was built during the reign of Abdolaziz who was an aspirant in Azerbaijani's power, but we have no precise information on his identity.
