Shāpur Cave

Shāpur Cave

The Shapur cave is located about 6 km from the historical Chugān strait near the city of Kazerun (Fārs region) in the heart of a mountain and due to the location of the statue of Shāpur I (272-240 AD) at its entrance, it became known as the Shāpur cave.

It is high over 7 meters from ground level and about one km long. The length of its entrance in the past was 16 meters but now, after relocating the statue of Shāpur, it has become wider and measures about 30 meters in width and 20 in height.

Approaching the cave, the measurement of the width and the height of the entrance decreases. The level of the cave has highs and lows and inside there are cavities in the shape of tanks.

Climbing into the cave was not easy due to its location above the mountain but now this level has been made flat and 230 stone steps have been made with iron railings around it to make entry easy.

The statue of Shāpur was made from a colossal stalagmite that was present in this cave and despite having passed 1700 years is still standing and is the only remaining statue of antiquity that is about 7 meters high.

At the entrance to the cave there are two inscriptions on stone, one of which is the translation of the epigraph of Shāpur to Naqsh-e Rajab and the other explains the method of re-installation of the statue.
