Mausoleum of Ferdowsi (Firdusi)
The mausoleum of Ferdowsi, burial place of thehakim Abol-Ghasem Ferdowsi, an Iranian epic poet, is located in the city of Tus (Khorāsān Razavi region). Its construction, following the presentation and analysis of various projects by architects and major local and foreign designers, was completed in the year 1934.
The previous building or buildings have suffered damage, destruction and numerous modifications over time.
The complex of the mausoleum of Ferdowsi, which is located within its private garden, is one of the most beautiful in Iran and its design is inspired by that of the mausoleum of Cyrus the Great. The external façade includes decorative elements from the Achaemenid era, in particular the columns and the capitals.
The area of the complex is equal to 6 hectares and includes the garden, the mausoleum building, the swimming pool, the statue of Ferdowsi, the administration building, the library, the museum and the mausoleum of well-known contemporary poets like Mehdi Akhavān Sāles together with his statue.
The bust ofhakim Abol-Ghasem Ferdowsi is located opposite the pool. The construction of the mausoleum which is in concrete, stone and cube-shaped tiles is 18 meters high and was built above the underground sepulcher; on each side there are stairs. Some parts of the Shāhnāmeh and bas-reliefs of stories such as: the Rostam war, the war between the Persians and the Turans, the battle of Rostam and Sohrāb etc. were engraved in the parts and in the interior and exterior walls of the building.
In the central part of the mausoleum there is a half-meter high marble plaque indicating the burial place of Ferdowsi and explanations have been written about it to present the great Iranian poet.
In the museum dedicated to him are preserved objects with various names, among which are the stone works from the prehistoric period found in the Tus plateau, pottery, coins and carafes from the Islamic period, carries perfumes and oil lamps.
The masterpiece letterio of Ferdowsi titled "Shāhnāmeh" ("Book of Kings") composed of about 60000 distichs, is one of the largest and most impressive epic compositions in the world and this unparalleled volume is the fruit of thirty years of suffering and the poet's labors. This work has been translated into various languages.
In the Iranian calendar the 25 day of the month of Ordibehesht was called the anniversary of the commemoration of thehakim Abol-Ghasem Ferdowsi.
