Catacombs of Siraf

Catacombs of Siraf

The Sirāf catacombs are located in the site of the ruins of the ancient port, now called Tāheri (Bushehr region) and their construction dates back to the Sassanid era and post-Islamic periods.

In this large cemetery many rectangular-shaped tombs, generally with a length equal to 210 cm, a width of 50 cm and a depth from 40 to 60 cm, were dug in the stone and cement mortar was used to make them geometric or for the external surface coating.

In this place, which is commonly attributed to the Zoroastrians, the tombs face west. In front of the western cemetery there is another one where the height of the hills is greater and the graves are bigger. Facing the hill, following the natural obstacles, there are tall vertical 3 meters and wide 2 tombs that are arranged in an orderly slope like an expanse of beehives.

Since this cemetery at different times in history has been used by people of different religions, experts have called it the cemetery of civilizations.
