Stone Tombs (the Zoroastrian Stones)

The Stone Tombs (the Zoroastrian Stones)

The stone tombs represent the oldest stone works of this region which belong to a very long period, from the age of the Medes to the end of that of the Sassanids. The Zoroastrian religion believed that the earth was sacred and, for this reason, the corpses were not buried but were placed in special stone constructions, called 'ossari'. These kinds of graves could be single or collective, I constitute a tradition of burial that was perpetuated for more than 1500 years and is a testimony of the spread of Zoroastrianism and its followers in this area.
