The lagoons

The Ardabil region due to the fact that it is located in two areas near the Aras and Ghazaluzan rivers, as well as having waterways and lakes, has numerous lagoons considered as natural attractions such as: Jeirān Goli, the Mil-e Maghān dam, the lagoon of Yāmchi dam, Geilārlu, Tappekhor, Sohā, Ganjgāh, Nushār, Shurgol, Mollā Ahmad, Toprogh Kandi, Shorābil lake, and Āt goli.

Laguna Jeirān Goli

Jeirān Goli lagoon is located in the area of ​​Shirvān Darresi in the Ardabil region, 20 km south-east of Meshgin Shahr and near Lāherud. The height of this lagoon compared to the sea level is 2200 meters.

A large number of aquatic and semi-aquatic migratory birds migrate to this place in winter from areas of Asia Minor, the Caucasus and Siberia. Also birds such as fulica, grebe, gray heron, gadwall, mallard or Cape Verde live in this lagoon as well as animals such as the pig, the fox, the wolf, the mouflon, the Armenian mouflon, the brown bear, the partridge and the palm or Senegalese dove. The surroundings are covered with plants such as bamboo, lawn plants and herbaceous plants.

Mil-e Maghān Dam

The Mil-e Maghān dam with its concrete and ground surface and 996 hectares of land is located a short distance from Aslānduz on the Aras River as a common border and dam of friendship between Iran and Azerbaijan and procures water to the city of Pars Ābād, Bilehsavār and Germi and irrigate the terrreni of the Maghān plain.

The Mil-e Maghān dam lagoon, which according to the parameters of the Rāmsar Convention has been classified as an international lagoon, is the resting place for migratory birds - from the north and Siberia to the south - and is considered among the tourist attractions.

Lagoon of the Yāmchi dam

This dam is located at 5 km from the city of Nir. Its water is used for the town of Ardabil and for the irrigation of the land under the dam. The heights around it and also the lush nature of the surroundings make it a place suitable for fun and recreation and in the lake behind the dam are various types of free fish including the common carp, fish of the genus Carassius and the Rutilus kutum ( white fish).

This place has been recognized as a tourist model area at the national level.

Lake Geilārlu

The artificial lake Geilārlu next to the homonymous village in the city of Germi, was built in order to provide water to the latter. It is one of the important habitats of migratory and semi-aquatic birds such as: the various species of heron, the plunger, the smergo, the pochard and the mallard and thanks to its geographical position and the beautiful landscape, it is a tourist area.

Laguna Tappekhor

The Tappekhor lagoon is located in the village of the same name, to the east of the city of Ardabil. In addition to the pleasant air, observing the birds that take refuge in the warm season in this lagoon and their group flight on it, have transformed Tappekhor into a tourist center.

This place has been recognized as the most suitable habitat for the Siberian crane or snow crane that is in danger of extinction.

Sohā Lagoon

The Soha dam reservoir is located near the village of the same name in the part of Namin, in the province of Ardabil and in the hills adjacent to the forest. This area, which is actually the starting point of the Gilân region's forests, being endowed with water and a mild climate, is much appreciated by naturalists.

Photographing unique views of the area, walking in the mountain villages of Sohā and Lātun, passing by small and unspoiled villages and meeting people who lead a simple life… all this is one of the attractions of this area.

Laguna Ganjgāh

The Ganjgāh lagoon is located near the village of the same name in the town of Kowsar in the south-east of Ardabil. This permanent lagoon welcomes aquatic and semi-aquatic birds including the rusty hunchback, the marbled duck, the pelican, the swan, the flamingo, the heron, the major eagle or spotted eagle and here also live various species of geese , ducks, the common casarca, a species of emerald toad, a type of frog ridibunda or greater green frog and also the common carp.

Laguna Nushār

The seasonal Nushār lagoon is located near the village of Nou Shahr (Nushār) southeast of Ardabil. The soils around the lagoon that are wet and rich in vegetation, in spring and winter are used by some species of birds and in other seasons they also constitute the grazing land for itinerant livestock breeders.

Laguna Shurgol

The Shurgol or Shurgoli lagoon is located near the homonymous village in the town of Bilehsavār, southeast of Ardabil. With a height of 1340 meters above sea level, as one of the least known natural attractions of this area, in spring it is the ideal habitat for migratory birds such as: the wild goose, the fulica, and the marbled duck .

Laguna Mollā Ahmad

The Mollā Ahmad lagoon is located next to the homonymous village of the city of Nir, south-east of Ardabil. This natural, marshy and permanent lagoon, which is situated at a height of 1480 meters above sea level, is the place where local and migratory birds live between the mallard, the gray duck (a species of diver duck), and the common casarca other species.

Laguna Toprogh Kandi

The Toprogh Kandi lagoon is located near the village of the same name in the town of Pars Ābād, Ardabil region. It is a semi-natural lagoon that has come to be created as a result of human activities and the creation of an embankment to prevent the advancement of river erosion.

This lagoon is a very pleasant environment and an ideal habitat for aquatic and semi-aquatic birds such as: the small cormorant, the wild goose, the common jack, the mallard, the gadwall, the pochard, the platalea, the grebe common, fulica, common cormorant, finches, heron, botaunins and common pheasant.

Lake of Shurābil

The recreational lagoon or lake of Shurābil with an area of ​​180 hectares is located in the town of Ardabil. The reason for the attribution of the name Shurābil is the great salinity of its water whose flowers in the past were used to treat the sick; today however fresh water has been added to the lake.

Shurābil which is the only natural lake within a city in Iran, is one of the important habitats of migratory birds such as: frizzy or curly pelicans, turkish fistione, golden eye, wild goose, minor bustard, the black stork, the francolinus, the common pheasant, the duck, the common tallar, the heron, the fulica, the common shire, and in this deep lake 20 meters are raised fish such as trout, pike, carp common and the lobster.

However when it becomes cold all or part of the lake freezes. Shurābil as a recreational and green space, as well as having natural attractions, welcomes tourists with sporting and cultural activities such as: rowing, athletic track, bike path, zoo, some hotels, a funfair and a restaurant in the middle to the lake and after Sareyn and its thermal baths is the second most visited place in the Ardabil region.

Laguna Āt Goli

The Āt Goli lagoon is located in Meshgin Shahr, in the Ardabil region and on the slopes of Mount Sabalān. Considering that it is located next to Shirvān Darresi, its climate, flora and fauna have been influenced by this magnificent valley and therefore an unspoiled nature has been created, very beautiful and worth visiting in its surroundings.

This lagoon is also a breeding ground for various species of cold water fish - its rainbow or rainbow trout are well known - and fishing events are sometimes organized here as well. This 3 meters deep lagoon, in spring and summer having a very mild climate, is a destination for many tourists and a protected environment for the presence of migratory birds such as: the fulica, the piarist and various species of ducks.

According to a legend that still survives among the locals, when Babak Khorramdin is killed, his horse due to the distance from Babak goes crazy and arrives in this lagoon where he hides. According to local beliefs, sometimes this great and magnificent horse comes out of the lake and in the light of the moon strongly neighs and goes in search of its rider.

The locals consider the water of this lagoon as the sacred Sabalān mountain and await the day when a courageous character from the country of Azerbaijan rebels and claims possession of the Babak horse.

The inhabitants of the area also believe that Āt Goli (Turkish word meaning "lake of the horse") has an endless depth and for this reason they also call it Dib-e sabz or "lake that has no depth".
