Mausoleum of Bar'ā Ben Mālek

Mausoleum of Bar'ā Ben Mālek

The mausoleum of Bar'ā Ben Mālek Ben Nazr Ansāri, one of the companions of Prophet Mohammad (A), is located in the city of Shushtar (Khuzestān region) and dates back to the Safavid era and Qajar.

This mausoleum, located in front of the ruins of the Salasel palace, is one of the most ancient buildings of the Islamic period in Shushtar; the ancient building with a dome and the damaged audience hall later, in the year 1003 up to the 1006 of the lunar Hegira, was rebuilt and in the 1230 it was restored again; subsequently the mausoleum was damaged several times until in the period Pahlavi was rebuilt again. Moreover, during the Iraq's imposed war on Iran, it was severely damaged by the bombing.

The current building of this mausoleum was erected with theIwan, the portico and its goldasteh (open spaces at the top of the minaret where the muezzin calls the faithful to prayer) from the qajaro period. The internal dome and the interior itself reflect the style of construction of the Safavid domes.

The door gives on a Iwan which by means of three low doors is connected to the external one whose portal has stucco work and precious paintings. The other parts of the building also have stucco decorations, majolica and Roman crescent arches.

The color and style of the majolica is a fusion of the work of the qajara school and the imitation of the tapestry of the end of the Safavid period; Allah-Mohammad-Ali words and drawings are drawn on rectangles engraved around a base with black calligraphy on a heavenly turquoise background.

The eight skylight windows are located between the inscriptions in the form of Roman arch, crescent-shaped bezel and are constructed of reticulated tiles. On the eastern wall on the front there are arches and majolica arches with different colors and geometric designs.

The relatively large cemetery is located next to the mausoleum and the entrance door is located in the west wing. The dates of the sepulchres continue until the qajaro period.

The Bar'ā Ben Mālek mausoleum every year on the day of the Āshurā welcomes special groups and ceremonies of mourning such as the transportation of the palm tree etc.
