Martian Mountains of Nehbandan

Martian Mountains of Nehbandan

The Martian and miniature mountains of Nehbandan are located in the Lut desert of Nehbandān (southern Khorāsān region). These mountains of red and gray, of calcareous material and notched shape, assumed due to the erosion of water and wind, are devoid of vegetation, have a height of between 5 and 100 meters and resemble sugar cones ; they formed a large mountain range 1 km wide and 25 km long considered one of the geologically most beautiful phenomena in eastern Iran.

The color of the mountain and the presence of heat evoke in the mind of the observer of surreal landscapes, the presence of subtle and delicate grooves inside the mountain, together with the red and gray colors at first glance remind the Martian and lunar hills.

The Martian mountains also exist in Chābahār, in the Iranian region of Sistān and Baluchistān.
