The Pahlavan Hill

The Pahlavan Hill

The area known as Teppe-ye Pahlavanan, Pahlavi Hill, is one of the oldest human settlements in the Jajarm plain area and in the entire Northern Khorasan region.

The excavations carried out have revealed numerous tools and ceramics pigmented in red and enriched with stylized geometric or naturalistic decorations, dating back to the Neolithic era and manufactured according to the particular technique and composition of materials typical of the area.

What today appears as a small hill in the middle of the desert, between the sixth and fifth millennium BC was a very active proto-industrial center. The discovery of particular types of drills, useful for stone processing, suggests that the main activity of this site was the processing of hard and semi-precious stones.

According to the archaeologist Azizi Khoranaghi, the settlement was abandoned during the fifth millennium BC and only repopulated many centuries later.
