Alagol lagoon

The Alagol lagoon is located next to the city of Inche Boron in the province of Gonbad-e Kavus (Golestan region); being at the center of the great salt plain of Turkmen Sahra its water is salty and with an area of ​​25 square km and a maximum depth of 2,5 meters, it is considered the largest lake in the Golestan region.

In its water supply the Atrak river, the tributaries and its streams play an important role. The height of the lagoon is 6 meters below sea level.

The surrounding flora is mostly made up of reeds, sedges, shrubs and tamarisks and its seabed is usually covered with green algae of more or less the same shape. The breeding of saltwater fish, in particular the white fish of the Caspian Sea and the common carp is widespread.

This international swamp is home to migratory birds and so far 85 species of birds have been recognized in the Alagol, Ajigol and Almagol lagoons, including 19 native and 66 migratory species.
