Rasht

The city of Rasht is the capital of the Gilan region; its original construction probably dates back to the pre-Islamic era and the Sassanian period. Since 1595, by the will of Shah Abbas, it has been the capital of the Gilan region.

This large metropolis, with an area of ​​180 square km is located in a flat terrain and enjoys a mild climate with hot and muggy summers and harsh and humid winters and is crossed by two rivers, Gouhar Rood and Zarjub.

The city of Rasht has 40 active parks and many of them such as Sabze Meidan are very old.

The local customs of the Gilan region are very beautiful; men wear traditional shoes (chumush) and wear the vest, hat and jacket. Wide, pleated skirts and vests with herringbone motifs are traditional women's clothing. “Nouruzkhani” and “Arus Guleh” are some typical rites of this region still observed by the locals.

Rasht in 2015, with over 170 types of food, was named a UNESCO creative city of gastronomy. Among the known dishes of this area we can mention: Mirza ghasemi, Baghala Gatogh, Torsh Tareh, Dabiji and Kal Kabab and among the typical sweets, Kaka, Resht-e Khoshkar, honey halva, and sauces like Chashni and Dalar.

The crafts of the city include: Kalushu jaru (rice straw broom), kilims, terracotta and bamboo objects, the typical embroidery of this area and the weaving of wicker baskets.
