Masuleh

The historic and tourist town of Māsuleh is located in the city of Fuman (Gilān region) and its original stepped architecture dates back to the Zand and Qajar.

Around the fourteenth century the people of "Kohne Māsuleh" who lived a short distance from the current city, along with other people from other parts of Iran, emigrated to an area that is still known today as the city of Māsuleh.

It is located in the heart of green mountain ranges, is a small traditional architectural complex and is summarized in a phrase "the courtyard of the upper building is the roof of the lower one", so that the area in front of the houses and roofs they are used as sidewalks; in fact, its houses are usually on two floors and the small streets and the numerous stairs do not allow access to any motor vehicle.

The possibility of building in Māsuleh, being a village with a population of less than 1000 people, seems to be very limited and can only be rebuilt and restored.

Māsuleh has four main neighborhoods and a four-storey bazaar, each of which independently has a direct relationship with the city bazaar with over 120 commercial units. The presence of more than four caravanserais, two hammams equipped with khazineh, over 33 public sources, 10 mosques and 5 Imāmzādeh, derives from the development and magnificence of this city in recent times.

The anthropological museum of Māsuleh at the entrance to the city displays a collection of objects and documents relating to the culture and life of local people and neighboring villages. Among the typical dishes of Masuleh you can mention the cream of smoked aubergines with garlic, tomatoes and eggs or  mirzā ghāsemi and among his souvenirs at chamush (sort of handmade slippers), kilims, shawl and short and long socks, wood and iron crafts, traditional clothes, local desserts called agerdak, to small dolls intertwined with wool, gloves and rufarsh (kind of short socks) of cotton and wool, sponges for the bath, woolen hats, jam and homemade colored vinegars etc.

Māsuleh with its high misty mountains, forest, verdant mountain villages, river, caves, waterfalls, numerous springs and the forest around it, is among the most touristy areas of northern Iran with its many attractions natural, especially at the end of spring and summer.

Māsuleh is covered in snow in many periods of the year.

 Kohne Māsuleh 

A short distance from the new Māsuleh, the old one, the main and original residence of its inhabitants, with traces of human presence such as baker's stones, etc., has spread in a wide area that is considered of archaeological interest.

During the research carried out in this area, enamelled terracottas of various colors dating from the fifth to the eighth century of the Lunar Hegira have been found. "Kohne Māsuleh" was one of the important centers in the field of iron working.
