In Lecce the shots of Giulia Frigieri: "Surfing Iran"

The photographic exhibition by Giulia Frigieri; The woman and the surf.

In the summer of 2013, the Irish surfer Easkey Britton proposed to two Iranian athletes, Shahla Yasini (dive guide) and Mona Seraji (snowboarder) to form the first team of female surfers in Iran. Shahla and Mona enthusiastically accept Easkey Britton's proposal and that same summer they find themselves pioneers of a movement that would have marked the arrival of a wave of news for the next Iranian generations. “Surfing Iran” is a photographic story of a revolution that sees a woman as the protagonist and with her the disclosure of a sport unthinkable for an almost desert-like land.

Surfing, in Iran, a revolution that uses sport as a motor of social aggregation and emancipation. The region of  Sistan and Baluchestan Culturally and geographically oriented more to Pakistan it is the poorest and most remote area of Iran, it is the only area with potential for surfing.

It is here that the three women begin their adventure and it is on Ramin's beach that the whole story unfolds. Thanks to the wide circulation on social media and the participation of many young people, the surfer scene is slowly gaining ground in Iran as a tangible possibility for young people who step by step try to promote a sport in their territory that equally involves men and women and is a tool for change.

From the collaboration between LO.FT, vicure, Surfinsalento.it and Hobo the magazine, “Surfing Around” is born. The first theme of the format is women and surfing, with the “Surfing Iran” exhibition by photographer Giulia Frigieri.

Giulia Frigieri is a young Italian documentary photographer based in Rome but often traveling around the Middle East.
