Tarikhaneh the oldest mosque in Iran on the ICESCO heritage list

The oldest mosque in the country soon on the ICESCO heritage list.

Iran intends to propose "Tarikhaneh", one of its oldest mosques, as a candidate for inclusion in the cultural heritage list of the Islamic Organization for Education, Science and Culture (ICESCO)

The mosque, built with mud bricks, is located near the modern city of Damghan in the Semnan region. Some sources, including ArchNet, claim that Tarikhaneh is the oldest existing mosque in Iran.

Also called Tarik Khana, the monument incorporates a simple plant of Arab origin with Sassanid construction techniques (the Sassanid dynasty was the last to reign in Persia before the advent of Islam).

Not far from the mosque, the remains of a square minaret of uncertain date can be observed, perhaps part of the original construction, and a cylindrical minaret from the Seljuk period (1060-1307). The latter is surprisingly divided into six ornament zones, each made of brick with a different geometric pattern.

The World Organization for Islamic Education, Science and Culture (ICESCO, formerly ISESCO) is a body operating under the auspices of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) active in the fields of education, science, of culture and communication in Islamic countries with the aim of supporting and strengthening relations between member states.

The organization, founded in 1979, is based in Rabat, Morocco, and has 54 member states.
