Although the history of the knowledge of Iran in Italy began with the seven centuries of interaction between the Roman empire and the portico and Sassanid one; and the ancient historical relations of these two civilizations have been subsequently cultivated without interruption, the history of Iranianism in Italy does not go back beyond the second half of the sixteenth century.
After the first flourishing of these studies in contemporary Italy (1950-1960), which saw the increase of research both from a quantitative and qualitative point of view, the second stage (1970-1980) resulted in the multiplication in this area of university positions and research institutions, as well as disciplinary sectors and related methodological approaches.
This process culminated in the formation of a network of such magnitude that, even if we limited ourselves to the mere listing of the names of active Iranians, the titles of the translated and published volumes and the Italian research conducted independently or in collaboration with Iran and scholars Iranians, we could not make a complete picture of them.
