Iran commemorates eight years of the Sacred Defense

Iran commemorates the sacrifice of those who defended the homeland.

From today 22 September and for a week, Iran remembers the anniversary of the Sacred Defense, the beginning of the war imposed between Iran and Iraq (1980-1988). A war wanted and supported by the United States.

On September 22, 1980, the Iraqi army under Saddam's dictatorship launched a full-scale offensive against Iran. Saddam's air force launched surprise airstrikes on ten Iranian airports to destroy Tehran's air force. Iraq made use of very advanced military weapons supplied by the United States and several countries hostile to Iran. In the heroic Sacred Defense of the country, in addition to the armed forces, hundreds of thousands of volunteers joined the Iranian Armed Forces to defend their country from Iraqi aggression.

In August 1988, after eight years of a terrible war imposed on the Iranian people with the consequent death of over 1.5 million men and women and 1,700 thousand wounded, the United Nations Organization Resolution 598 was accepted by the parties with the proposal of cessation of hostilities of the longest century conflict.

September 22 in the Iranian calendar is the beginning of Holy Defense Week.

The Week is celebrated annually nationwide in commemoration of the martyrs and war veterans of the Iraqi war imposed on Iran in 1980-88.

On this occasion, the cultural institute of Iran in Rome organizes a virtual photographic exhibition from unpublished photos of unknown photographers to present the sacrifices that Iranian soldiers made to defend their homeland.

The Iranian people forever recognize the value of their generosity to honor the people and the homeland.

The exhibition is visible on the online exhibition portal of the Cultural Institute of the Islamic Republic of Iran (https://www.irancultura.it/iranart/) from 22 September for 10 days.

Furthermore, in the photographic exhibition a space was dedicated to the film review of the Sacred Defense of Iranian cinema.
