The 12 May is the date of birth of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first and only winner of the Fields Medal, unfortunately passed away in July 2017, three years after receiving the most coveted recognition in mathematics, at the ICM in Seoul in the 2014. Subsequently, the 31 July 2018 in Rio de Janeiro, the Committee of Women in Mathematics of the Iranian Mathematical Society proposed to the participants of the World Conference of Women in Mathematics, (WM) ², that the 12 May Day be adopted to celebrate women in mathematics, an initiative that was approved by the majority of the participants at the conference. In order to publicize this initiative, an independent Coordination Group was formed, which with the collaboration of the EWM (European Women in Mathematics), of the AWM, (Association of Women in Mathematics) and other similar associations, based in Africa, India, Chile and Iran, will have the task of organizing events around the 12 Maggio to celebrate women in mathematics.

Information relating to these initiatives, which currently number more than seventy, is disseminated through the website http://may12.womeninmaths.org/.
