Traditional wall paintings

Traditional wall paintings

The murals in Iran have a particularly long history behind them. The oldest wall paintings found in Iran date back to the Neolithic - about eight thousand years before the birth of Christ - and are located on some rocks of the caves of Dusheh and Mirmalās, both located in the Kuhdasht area (Lorestān Province).

In the course of history, this art has enjoyed enormous consideration and has been expressed in the most disparate ways. In the murals, the styles and materials used during the various historical periods - closely linked to the climatic conditions, the availability of the materials themselves, the buildings and the various architectural styles - are different.
The wall paintings were used to decorate palaces, buildings of nobles and lords, mausoleums, temples, mosques, house exteriors (intended for guests) and interiors (haram, intended for the inhabitants of the house and women), public baths, cafes, etc.
