Humanitarian aid from Italy for the extraordinary flood in Iran

40 tons of first aid goods and health kits.

The Italian Cooperation and the Civil Protection Department, in coordination and with the support of the EU civil protection mechanism activated in Brussels, yesterday sent a plane containing humanitarian goods to Tehran that took off from the United Nations Humanitarian Intervention Base ( UNHRD) of Brindisi, as the Deputy Foreign Minister Emanuela C. Del Re had announced in recent days.
The initiative is aimed at alleviating the humanitarian emergency caused by heavy floods in large areas of Iran, in light of the Iranian Government's requests to the European Union.
In the presence of the Italian Ambassador Mauro Conciatori, 40 tons of first aid goods and health kits, worth 321.000 dollars, were delivered as a gift to the Iranian Red Crescent that will use them to support the activities of assistance to the population affected by floods.
The Italian Embassy in Tehran remains in constant contact with the Iranian Foreign Ministry and Red Crescent to examine other possible requests for assistance, in the spirit of the traditional relations of friendship and closeness between the two countries and the two peoples.

The emergency continues mainly in Khuzestan and Loristan, the other areas most affected Golestan and Fars begin to deal with the immense damage after the apocalyptic flood of the past few weeks that has hit 26 of the 31 Iranian provinces. For now the victims have risen to 76, more than 790 the wounded, 220.000 people in emergency conditions, 725 bridges destroyed, 14.000 km of damaged roads. Aid began to arrive from various countries and international organizations, despite the blockade imposed also for humanitarian aid by the sanctions decided by the USA. During times of emergency, a blast and response in no uncertain terms animated the social networks, between Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. In a moment of great suffering due to a natural catastrophe, reactions and comments have intensified and intertwined that have fueled the controversy in a tortured and wounded Iran. It is not trivial to remember that the floods have devastated the Iranian plateau during a period of holidays and large movements within the country, for the festivities of Nowrooz, Persian New Year, a period in which the Iranians travel and often return to the cities of origin.
