Senj

Senj; Persian Musical Instrument

The senj belongs to the family of instruments that sound by own vibration (idiophones). It consists of two metal circular layers (in rare cases of wood) in the shape of a plate and in the center of each is a hole to which a handle is joined.

This instrument has different sizes and the ancient models were made of bronze; some types are used today during the mourning ceremonies of the month of Moharram of which the most important is the senj of Bushehr.

Smaller models of senj with names like senjak, zang, ghāshaghak, sharinag, jinag etc ... are popular in some areas of Iran. This type of senjak is sometimes tied to the fingers of the hand with a string or an elastic band and in some areas it is made to play by the dancers during the dance.

In general the largest specimen of this instrument in Iran is used in mourning ceremonies, while smaller models in weddings and parties.
