Robab

Robab; Persian Musical Instrument

The robāb belongs to the plectrum cordophones family. This instrument consists of a harmonic case with two high parts joined together, a short neck, a head or "crown", some pegs, strings, about 5 frets, a bridge and a simgir (tying point of the strings).

It has two rows of strings. The opening of the lower part of the harmonic case is covered by leather while that of the upper part by a layer of wood. The robāb is played with a plectrum made of horns, wood or nylon.

In the Sarāvān area in the Baluchistān is the most important instrument played in the Naqshbandiyya dervish brotherhood. In the northern areas of the Baluchistān and Sistān the robāb is used in festivals.
