Oscar for In The Shadow of the Cypress

Oscar, animated short In the Shadow of the Cypress wins.

Iran’s representative at this year’s Oscars ceremony managed to win the award for best animated short film with “In the Shadow of the Cypress Tree.” This work, which neither tells the story of middle-class life nor found its way to this lonely-road competition, portrays a different story of a war survivor.
The animated short film “In the Shadow of the Cypress” tells the story of the complex life of a family of two: a father struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder and a wounded daughter who accompanies him. The two characters in this animation, without exchanging words, touchingly show the suffering of a captain father and his daughter. This work was created using the technique of two-dimensional hand-drawing and frame-by-frame, which, according to experts, is considered one of the most difficult methods for producing animations.
The directors of this animation stated that during the making of this 20-minute work, they faced financial limitations and a lack of human resources, but with commitment and perseverance, they managed to maintain the continuity and pace of the narrative without compromising the timing of the work. The sound design and music of this animation are also considered strong points that have aroused the admiration of critics.
“In the Shadow of the Cypress” achieved this success in competition with works such as the animated short “Yuck” from France and the Japanese anime “Magic Candy”. This victory came at a time when Iranian animated short film, after its golden age in the 50s, has now revived hopes of a return to its golden days with this award. Experts believe that this success could be a turning point for the revival of the animated short film industry in Iran
