Sons of the Sun in Italian cinemas.
The new work by Iranian Majid Majidi presented at the Venice film festival after a visit to the Oscars ceremony, has just been released in Italian cinemas and presents the world of forgotten children.
For some decades now, Iranian cinema has been treading the international scene with great success with critics and audiences. No exception is the new work by Majid Majidi, who has always been increasingly oriented towards the intimate and painful exploration of the world of childhood and adolescence that is violated, abandoned, abused. In Children of the Sun he does so through the story of the young and intense Ali and his small group of friends, who transform themselves into characters worthy of the most heartfelt coming of age novel.
The narrative overturning of the plot, all too simplified, but immeasurably neorealist in its cinematic conduction, is shown to viewers as a metaphor for redemption: the expedient is provided by a local criminal leader who forces the boy to recover a treasure. Very little defined and definable, hidden, by chance coincidence, the self-styled treasure is hidden in the deep ravines of a school for young disadvantaged children.
La conditio sine qua non to recover it is as obvious as it is paradoxical; Ali and his young friends have to go through the school, but through the front door. They have to register, attend it, study its intricacies to understand how to access this unknown treasure more quickly and effectively. The young boy's tough search therefore becomes a frantic and tireless kaleidoscopy of rebellion and liberation.
