August 5 is the International Day of Islamic Human Rights and Human Dignity.
August 5th marks the Day of Islamic Human Rights and Human Dignity, established by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in 2008 at the initiative of Iran. This day invites us to reflect on the fundamental principles of justice, equality, and respect for human dignity that characterize Islamic teachings.
Deep historical roots
Human rights are rooted in Islamic and Iranian history and identity, from the Cyrus Cylinder to the Holy Quran. As the Qur'an recalls:
“O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the noblest of you in the sight of Allah is he who fears Him most.” (Surah Al-Hujurat, 13)
The universal principles
The Cairo Declaration on Human Rights in Islam, adopted by the OIC in 1990, emphasizes how universal human rights are intrinsically linked to Islamic values, placing emphasis on:
Family Protection
Right to education
Elimination of all forms of discrimination
Respect for human life, honor and freedom
The challenges of our time
Today we commemorate this day as we witness the violation of the most basic human rights—the right to food, security, and territorial sovereignty—in Palestine and other regions of the world. In Gaza, children and mothers suffer under the weight of an oppression that denies the fundamental principles of human dignity.
The need for renewal
The current human rights system is in deep crisis. A constructive dialogue between the intellectual elites of Iran, Islamic countries, and Europe is needed to:
Rebuilding human rights structures
Prevent the instrumental use of human rights for illegitimate political purposes
Promote a world order based on justice and equity
