Kharazmi: The Persian Father of Algebra and Algorithms

On July 13, Iran celebrates the birthday of one of the greatest scientists, mathematicians and astronomers in human history: Muhammad ibn Musa al-Kharazmi Born in the region of Khwarezm between the 8th and 9th centuries AD, during the flourishing Islamic Golden Age, al-Kharazmi lived and worked in Baghdad under the patronage of the Abbasid caliph al-Ma'mun.

Inside the famous House of Wisdom (Bayt al-Hikma), led a massive effort to translate and synthesize Greek and Indian scientific texts, effectively laying the foundations for a global scientific revolution.

The Pride of Persian Identity

For contemporary Iran and the entire Persian cultural world, al-Kharazmi represents a monumental pillar of national identity and a symbol of patriotic pride. He is the embodiment of Persian genius, capable of shaping the history of world science.

It is no coincidence that the Islamic Republic named the prestigious Kharazmi after him. Al-Kharazmi's legacy transcends Iranian borders to project itself across the entire course of human evolution. His insights have literally codified the language of modernity.

With his famous treatise Al-Kitab al-mukhtasar fi hisab al-jabr wa'l-muqabala, not only coined the name of an entire scientific discipline — thealgebra (term derived from al-jabr, or “completion”) — but it transformed mathematics by introducing a systematic method for solving linear and quadratic equations, detaching them from pure geometry.

But his most disruptive contribution was another: introducing to the West the Indian positional numbering system and the use of the zero, forever changed the way humanity performs calculations. From its very name, Latinized in the following centuries (from al-Kharazmi ad Algorithms), the term derives from algorithmThis is the fundamental logical structure that governs computing, computers, smartphones, and artificial intelligence today.

Without the extraordinary work of synthesis and methodological systematization of this ancient Persian scientist, the technological development of the modern world simply would not exist.
