IN THE SHADOW OF THE CYPRESS, the Iranian short film in Venice

The 80th edition of the Venice International Film Festival is underway on the Lido di Venezia from 30 August to 9 September 2023, hosting the Iranian animated short film entitled All'ombra del Cipresso (dar saye sarv) by Hossein Molayemi, Shirin Sohani in the Horizons section Short films in competition.

Synopsis

A former captain, who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, lives with his daughter in a house by the sea, leading an isolated and difficult life. Despite a deep desire to be a loving father, the captain finds himself unable to form the bond he wants with his daughter. One morning an event occurs that changes their lives forever. Whether it will prove to be a new source of hope or a further burden remains to be seen.

Directors' comments

Our film is all about the human spirit, and we embarked on a six-year journey to make it. Despite the challenges we faced, such as sanctions, limited budget and illness, our personal experiences and sense of mission gave us the motivation we needed to keep going. Thanks to this powerful push, in the end, we managed to make it happen.
